Bee House….is it a good idea with kids?!!!

I’m starting to have second thoughts about this already. I hope to talk myself back into it by writing this post. Let me explain a little further…

If you read one of my last weeks posts Spring Garden Makeover – our way! then you would know that we are in the throes of planning our garden spruce up.  Having two small football playing mud slingers as our opposition just adds to the fun.

I’m also wanting to make some real lifestyle changes for both of us grown ups. So much time is taken up by our jobs and the external demands on us that we both need to kick back, enjoy our time off more and make the most of what we have. The kids will benefit from this so much. We are making a good start….

So, the other evening…. the other half trots off to get the essentials in town and against his normal traits he comes back laden down, whoop whoop. What is the jewel in the crown is a ‘bee and insect house’! I’d never even seen one before.

We all love our outside space and having a fairy garden with little nooks and crannies around for creatures to make their own is a wish of mine and the other half.

Since he brought the bee house, I’ve been frantically looking up if bees will be a danger to the kids and will suddenly besiege us while we sit soaking up the rays of sun that our british summer time chooses to give us.

The general consensus is no. The best advice is to place the bee house out of the main part of the garden where it’s quiet. Place it where it’s not likely to get disturbed. Really important for us – start to educate our boys on what could happen if you poke the bee house with a large stick! Bees only sting if they feel under threat, not for fun.

Bees are in danger of disappearing from our country and are in need of a little TLC, this is our way of seeing if we can help them out and involve the boys in something a bit different.

Also, who knows what will choose to take up residence there, we could be in for a total surprise. We might have a ladybird nest….wow! I digress…..

So, under limited input from myself (I hid), the other half took his life in his own hands and found a remote spot up the bank and placed it high enough up a large tree not to be touched. It’s safe and secure, out of reach and open for business. Let see what the summer brings. Lets hope its not antihistamine!

I’m pretty happy now with the decision but I’ll wait and see. Have you tried to introduce animals into your garden or your environment that you hadn’t previously thought about?

  1. I think I’d bee cautious but some careful placing could help eliminate paths crossing, I think having the insect house is a great way to learn about the bugs. Good luck and thanks for sharing with #PoCoLo

  2. I couldn’t do it, but I’m insect (& most other wildlife) phobic in general, and not a sensible benchmark! I’m sure it is perfectly safe & actually sounds a lovely idea. #PoCoLo

  3. Oh wow, I never knew you could but something like this – amazing! I am also intrigued to see what the summer will bring you now!

I think your right though as long as its high enough and out of the children’s way then it should be absolutely fine. My two love snails, slugs, bugs and all sorts so I think they would be fascinated with something like this.

Thank you for linking up to #KCACOLS and I hope to see you back again on Sunday x

  4. You are one brave mama! We had a grape vine and didn’t realize that there was a bee hive underground nearby. When my daughter went to grab a grape, we got bombarded and she still remembers me running away with her and her being stung by a bee on the forehead. But, I know that certain bees are more aggressive than others, and it could have been avoided had we known the location prior to standing on it! Bees are very important for the environment so good job doing your part!

    1. Oh goodness! That’s not a good experience, sorry to hear that. First sign of it getting too big and I’ll move it further away. It’s pretty well placed already but still no bees yet!! Take care X

  5. I am scared shitless of bees. Have been since I was a kid, because I got stung often. I still run in fear when I see one. Others find it hilarious, jerks. Yet, you bee house looks super cool, and I almost want one, almost. We planted milkweed, because Monarch butterflies only eat milkweed and they are becoming more rare, think I’ll stick to the monarchs for now. Can’t wait for an update on the bee house! #KCACOLS

    1. Wow, didn’t know about the milkweed and the monarch butterflies. I can’t wait to see what actually does make its home there, it could be something random!:) for the moment you put the thought of bees out of your head;) X

  6. How lovely. I’m sure you’ll have some nice buzzy neighbours in no time. I like bees 🙂 Wasps on the other hand should face immediate and merciless annihilation, the little picnic ruining rotters. #KCACOLS

  7. Oh it looks lovely! That is very brave of you to want bee’s in your garden! I would be far too scared. Helping to save the bee’s though is such a nice thing to do. I hope when summer is here the bee’s are not disturbing you too much. Thank you for linking up to #fancyacoffeefriday 🙂

    1. We’ll bee careful!;) it’s such a tiny thing that I’ll be surprised if anything happens. My other half looked at it today and said something about it needing to face west! It’s beyond me!:) x

  8. I’ve seen/read/heard about these bee houses and they look great! I only wish we had some garden space so we could get outside more and maybe attempt to grow…something! #kcacols

    1. Thanks Kat:) most of our plants and things are on the window sills inside. I have these ideas but I’ll wait and see what happens 🙂 x

  9. I really want a beehive! If I have one I think it would be place a bit out of sight so that we can have peace and they can have theirs =)

Yours looks great and I hope the insects will start using it esp bees!

    1. Fingers crossed!:) and I’m leaving it all well alone, nobodies taken up residency yet! X

  10. What a lovely Bee house – I would love one of these but our gardens size closely resembles that of a postage stamp so probably not that safe! Looking forward to hearing how you get on with yours #fancyacoffeefriday

  11. I am curious what will bee living in your house! (keep it going) 😉 Did you purchase it or build it? I’d like to try one, too. Please keep us posted on the tenants! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures

Hopping over from the Post Comment Love party

    1. I’ve bee….n out to look today but the rains keeping everything away:) thanks for popping over Marci ?

  12. I have to bee honest (see what I did there?) , bees scare the shit out of both my kids and I… It’d be the last thing to enter our garden.

For you it might work and I think it’s a lovely idea in theory but in practice you’ll have to just wait and see.
